2021 winning images displayed in outdoor exhibit in Copley Square and Jamaica Plain

Boston Press Photographers Association’s 2021 Pictures of the Year Winning Photos Exhibited Outside at Copley Square and Jamaica Pond

BOSTON (May 12, 2022) – On May 12, the Boston Press Photographers Association is debuting the second annual outdoor exhibition in the organization’s 96 year history, featuring the award-winning images from the 2021 annual Pictures of the Year Contest. Hundreds of photographs and stories by over 20 photojournalists will be on view in Boston’s Copley Square from May 12 through May 26, followed by a showing at Jamaica Pond (near the boat house) in Jamaica Plain from May 26 through June 11. The images will be displayed on eight separate six-foot by six-foot “photo cubes.”

The photographers represent a range of news organizations including Agence France-Presse, The Associated Press, The Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Brockton Enterprise, European Pressphoto Agency, GBH, Getty Images, MetroWest, Patriot Ledger, Reuters, and independent photographers.

These images from 2021 not only document our second year of an ongoing pandemic, but also record and present the ways daily life has continued despite the pandemic’s upheaval. From local communities still struggling with the economic fallout of the pandemic and the resulting political divisions, to climate change and issues at the border, BPPA photojournalists continue to tell the stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary times. And remind us of the beauty in sport and nature all around us.

The BPPA is the oldest press photographers association in the U.S., dedicated to the pursuit, practice and advancement of journalism through the language of photography. These images from 2021 document and preserve daily events in order to bring essential stories, however uncomfortable, to the public to see and understand.

The exhibition is produced in collaboration with Photoville, a NY-based non-profit organization that works to promote a wider understanding and increased access to the art of photography for all, by activating public spaces, amplifying visual storytellers, and creating unique and highly innovative exhibition environments. Photoville’s Photo Structures are a customizable, modular, and transportable system to exhibit photography indoors and outdoors. For more information visit photoville.com.
