We will send you the zoom link shortly before the event. \n \nSign up here\n \nDuring the event Jon will present and discuss a series of photographs he shot in the late 1970’s of coal miners in Appalachia. \n“I am a strong believer in combining words with photos\, both to provide meaningful context and to add anecdotal information that personifies the images. I have done that with my photographs of coal miners\, which are mainly portraits\, but which also document a specific time in history\, often violent\, of coal mining in those areas of Kentucky\, Virginia and West Virginia known as Coal Country” \nPrior to his 27 years at Harvard\, Chase worked for several local newspapers and for the Associated Press.

SUMMARY:Digitizing Your Film Archive – Applying New Technology by Digital Silver Imaging
DESCRIPTION:ASMP New England\, in cooperation with the Boston Press Photographers Association\, is happy to announce a special\, live\, in-person\, and onsite program about new and repurposed technology to create high resolution scans from film. \nDigitizing Your Archive and using Capture One Software \nOn Thursday\, June 10\, Digital Silver Imaging will debut and demonstrate its On Site Image Preservation Service™ in their newly outfitted van at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester\, MA. DSI owner\, Eric Luden\, and Image Archive Specialist\, Scott Nidermaier\, will be on hand to showcase the equipment. The van is equipped with a state-of-the-art image capture system\, including the use of a medium format camera back\, that in seconds can digitize your film\, with drum scanner quality\, at a fraction of the drum scanner price. Digital Silver imaging is offering to digitize a single 35mm or 120 transparency\, or negative (Color or B&W) FREE during the event\, so don’t forget to bring your film (mounted or unmounted\, negatives in strips or singles – all are fine). \nThe event runs from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. There will be on-going demonstrations of the digitization process\, discussions of best practices for Capture One software\, and what to do after your files are converted. DSI will also discuss archive storage solutions\, and printing. \nThe Griffin Museum will remain open for extended hours for all attendees during the event. SUMMARY:How COVID Changed Us: A Pandemic in Photographs (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:MUST PREREGISTER FOR THIS EVENT \nOne year ago the pandemic forced us apart. It drove us out of the classroom and office; it shut down theaters and bars. Streets were empty and emergency rooms were overwhelmed by people falling ill. It also revealed existing inequities. Those already struggling battled isolation\, a lack of resources\, profound levels of stress and deep personal loss. \nIn the early months of the pandemic\, as most of us had no choice but to remain at home\, photojournalists were often the first and only eyes on the ground\, witnessing the impact of the coronavirus on nearly every aspect of our lives. Since then\, photojournalists have documented our struggle to find a way forward. \nCallie Crossley\, host of Under the Radar\, Basic Black and GBH News commentator\, brings four local photojournalists to a roundtable discussion to examine the pandemic through their photos\, stories and reflections. \nJoining Callie will be four members of the Boston Press Photographers Association: independent photojournalist Angela Rowlings\, Reuters Senior Photographer Brian Snyder\, Boston Globe Photographer Jessica Rinaldi and GBH’s Director of Photography\, Meredith Nierman. \n***\nThis event is part of an entire day of reflection and storytelling conducted by GBH News. DESCRIPTION:2018 Boston Press Photographers Association Photographer of the Year Craig F. Walker will talk about his work and present his award-winning series “Raising Connor” as part of Social Documentary Network’s ongoing Documentary Matters series at Digital Silver Imaging in Belmont. The event is free\, but advanced registration is required. You can do so by following this link. \n \nAbout Craig F. Walker\n \nCraig F. Walker joined the staff of The Boston Globe in June of 2015. During his 30-year career he has covered a broad range of stories including the aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center in New York\, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq\, the United States military\, post-traumatic stress disorder\, the Occupy movement and the refugee migration crisis in Europe. Raised in York\, Pennsylvania\, Craig graduated from the Rhode Island School of Photography and began his career working for the Marlborough Enterprise and the Berkshire Eagle. In 1998 he started working at The Denver Post in Colorado where he won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for “Ian Fisher: American Soldier.” \nIn 2012\, Craig was awarded a second Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for “Welcome Home\, The Story of Scott Ostrom”. Craig was also named Newspaper Photographer of the Year in the Pictures of the Year International competition. \nIn 2019\, Craig was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for “Raising Connor\,” the story of a young boy living with a complex developmental disability. Craig was also named Photographer of the Year in the Boston Press Photographers Association Pictures of the Year competition.  \nFeatured project\, “Raising Connor”\nConor is moody and unpredictable. He is easy to love\, affectionate\, and friendly. Vulnerable\, sweet\, devoted to family. Impulsive\, strong\, and overflowing with emotion. Dreaming of home\, always. Never quite at home\, anywhere. This is Connor Biscan\, a puzzle his family and caregivers have worked long and hard to solve\, a boy who lives at the intersection of autism and mental illness. It isn’t so much a rare place — as many as half of autistic children suffer from mental health problems — but it can be a deeply baffling one. The overlap between these afflictions is hard to untangle; diagnosis and treatment can be very difficult. And a health care system meant to help can instead be frustrating\, even harsh. \n \nAbout Documentary Matters\n \nDocumentary Matters is an initiative of the Social Documentary Network and Digital Silver Imaging to provide a place for photographers to meet with others involved with or interested in documentary photography and discuss ongoing or completed project. This is a free and open meeting for anyone interested in presenting\, viewing\, or discussing documentary photography. \nYou don’t need to be a professional\, expert\, or established–you just need to be committed to the documentary form and committed to learning from feedback from others. The MFA has graciously arranged for tickets for BPPA members to come see the exhibit together\, and for curator Kristen Gresh to speak about Iturbide\, the photographs and the exhibit. \nAttendees should meet at 6:15pm at the Huntington Avenue entrance to the MFA. BPPA Vice President Brian Snyder will be there with tickets and parking validation. Make sure you park in an MFA lot or garage to receive validation. \n“The photographs of Graciela Iturbide not only bear witness to Mexican society but express an intense personal and poetic lyricism about her native country. One of the most influential photographers active in Latin America today\, Iturbide captures everyday life and its cultures\, rituals\, and religions\, while also raising questions about paradoxes and social injustice in Mexican society. Her photographs tell a visual story of Mexico since the late 1970s—a country in constant transition\, defined by the coexistence of the historical and modern as a result of the culture’s rich amalgamation of cultures. DESCRIPTION:Iran Reflections – ©Randy Goodman\nFrom the event website:  \n1979 Hostage Crisis to 2015 Nuclear Agreement\nJoin us for a slideshow and talk by Randy Goodman on her newest photo series as she discusses the changes in Iran from 1979 to today\, including the effects of the Iran Nuclear Deal on the citizens of the country.  \nCambridge photojournalist Randy H. Goodman has an eye for people\, politics and possibilities. She’s captured images from Iran’s Islamic revolution to recent times. During her 35-year career\, she combined her formal training as a political sociologist with her passion for documentary photography. \nHer first foreign assignment was Iran\, three months after the November 4\,1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy.   She photographed a visit by a grassroots delegation of Americans who traveled to Tehran to meet with the Iranian students holding the U.S. hostages. \nIn 1981\, she\, along with two colleagues\, returned on an exclusive assignment for CBS-TV News.  At the time\, they were the only American journalists credentialed to work in Iran. Her third Iran assignment was for Time magazine (1983)\, where she toured the Iran-Iraq war zone\, covered breaking news events and photographed Ayatollah Khomeini from beneath her borrowed chador. \nIn 2009\, she produced her first exhibit of her Iran work titled IRAN: Images From Beneath a Chador: The Hostage Crisis and the Iran-Iraq War 1980-1983. The traveling exhibit was widely shown in the US and Europe. \nAfter a thirty-three year absence\, Randy returned to Iran in 2015 to photograph the societal changes during another pivotal period in that country’s history – – the signing of the Iran nuclear agreement. \nRandy’s photographs have been widely published in newspapers and magazines throughout the world including The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Washington Post\, TIME and in Egypt\, France\, Hong Kong\, Great Britain\, Libya\, Italy and Spain. She has also made numerous appearances on radio and television programs discussing her Iran work.

This exhibit showcases some of the best examples of those efforts. \nRoland “Rollie” Oxton served as a US Army photo corps photographer during World War II and went on to become a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer for the Record American/Boston Herald. For almost three decades his work captured the range of human emotion from sheer terror to moments of joy and even humor. \nStanley Forman is a photojournalist and videographer whose work has won him three Pulitzer Prizes and many other awards. Stanley’s career began when his father gave him a camera almost 50 years ago. While on staff for the Boston Herald American\, Stanley’s work set the standard for spot news photography creating powerful images that have stood the test of time. He continues to bring us his unique visual perspective and uncanny sense of timing as a videographer for WCVB-TV in Boston. \nRobert Wilson photographed for the Cambridge Chronicle and Somerville Journal back in the mid-70’s and early 1980’s. As a staff photographer for the Somerville Journal his news and feature story work captured city life… people\, parades\, poodles\, politics\, police and fire.

Behrakis was part of the Pulitzer Prize winning Reuters team for Breaking News Photography in 2016 and European News Photographer of the Year three times\, by the European Fuji Awards (in 1998\, 2002 and 2003) among numerous other awards.
