Edwin
T. Ramsdell Memorial Trophy
Awarded to the first place recipient
in the Spot News category
of the still photography division.
In
memory of Edwin T. Ramsdell, a Boston Post photographer, who
was killed while photographing the ocean liner Queen Mary
from the air. Ramsdell and other photojournalists were aboard
a plane which crossed the stern of the liner as she was making
her way to port. The plane suddenly went out of control and
crashed in the ocean. The other passengers aboard the plane
were badly shaken up but rescued by a passing freighter. |

Moe
Fineberg Award
Awarded to the first place recipient in the Feature category
of the still photography division.
Morris
Moe Fineberg dedicated his life to capturing the
graphic news events of the day on film. Moe Fineberg was killed
at the age of 56, on assignment for the Boston Post.
On September 30, 1949 he was assigned to cover the mock U.S.
Marine and U.S. Navy ship to shore invasion landing at Carson
Beach in South Boston. Suddenly the event took on the stark
grim reality of war itself as Moe fell, mortally wounded,
on the sandy beach. He was killed by a pyrotechnic projection
shell that exploded prematurely in the barrel of the projector.
Jim Callaghan, a Boston Globe photographer, standing only
a few feet away at the time of the explosion, said, Moe
died clutching his camera in one hand and a plate holder in
the other. |
